These are my public notes about the speech by Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski delivered Friday, October 14, 2011 in Normandy, France upon receipt of the de Tocqueville Prize prize where he addresses the current development in wealth distribution and some geopolitical issues.

An oversimplification of Russia’s role

I am not going to adress the 1%/99% issue. It is a good perspective to talk about the american self interest gone wrong. What stroke me as outdated are Mr. Brzezinski’s views of the geopolitical situation.

Start with Russia:

“It is now clear that Russia’s destiny is no longer the exercise of control over “half of the world.”

Looking at the current development of BRIC and the SCO that is a bit oversimplified. Russia has regained influence dramatically over the last few years. They really worked out how to use their gas supplies and other resources as leverage. Russia just completed a very important gas deal with China and are still the major force in central Asia.

The power cartel scenario

But I guess the real danger is the underlying assumption that there always has to be one national world power, or two rivaling once. How about the scenario, that actually a cartel of powers could be the main force behind the global development in the future. BRIC would have the potential to be that power. Sure, as of today there are some important steps missing, but imagine BRIC coming up with a supranational reserve currency and convincing some key countries to start trading oil and other important resources with it. The ‘scales’ would tip over night.

“[...] Russia’s eventual closer engagement with the West. That may not happen under a President Putin, but the internal preconditions for democratic evolution in Russia are growing and, in my view, will eventually preponderate.”

Putin tried to get closer to the west for many years. The west gave him a cold shoulder. Now that Russia is pursuing ‘the asian alternative’ Putin is received as not being pro-west!? I guess the problem rather lies in the west, specially the USA, never really ending the cold war, even though the enemy was gone.

Same with Turkey. They tried with a lot of effort to get a roadmap to enter the EU. The EU, specially Germany would not permit that. Now that the Turks gain global influence on their own, with the arab spring playing in their direction and with Turkey prospering economically we suddenly see them as part of the west!? I guess the reaction of one turkish minister to the last EU report about Turkey describes it well: “Maybe in a few years we write a report [about the EU]“.

Overestimating the west

And here IMHO is the major mistake in most western political analysis:

“While of less immediate consequence for Europe, America’s longer-term role in the rising new East can be equally important”

The big error is to assume the west would still matter in a “no way around us” matter. But the USA and EU doesn’t. Asia has gained enough momentum do go by it’s own. So we have to understand it is not up to the USA/EU to give direction, it is about still being useful in this new geopolitical construct. Don’t get me wrong: I believe that especially China has a large interest in giving the USA and Europe a seat at the table. Their money reserves are one reason, why they really would want to prefer a ‘migration path’ for the west. The still valuable technological input and the importance of the west as a market are other reasons. But to think the west still has a veto might prove to be erroneous.

He is right about the potential of conflict.

However Brzezinski has a point about the potential of conflict, however fails to mention the demographic factor. The biggest issue here is the fact, that together they have a deficit of est. 150 million women. Statistically this means you can have at least 150 million men killed in war without even noticing it in the demographics of the following generation. I don’t know if it will be this “rivalry” but there is potential for violent conflict, because if you don’t have one, you have 150 million frustrated men without the slightest chance of marriage.

Leserantwort auf den Artikel “Think different – “Die Piraten, Apple und die FDP”” von Christoph Giesa (FB) auf theeuropean.de zum Umgang mit dem Erfolg der Piraten-Partei.

Apple verabschiedet sich aber auch gnadenlos von Technologien, die sich auf dem absteigenden Ast befinden. Zuletzt in den Medien diskutiert: Der Abschied von Flash.

Damit will ich sagen: Die Einbindung “Analoger” ist eine Sackgasse.
1. Die gegebenen Verwaltungsprozesse sind analog. Viele Änderungen werden zunächst als digitale Ergänzung implementiert werden müssen, z.B. Diskussion eines Antrags zum Parteitag im Wiki, bevor dieser traditionell an alle Delegierte gesendet wird und dann traditionell am Parteitag abgestimmt wird. Diese Ergänzung schliesst Analoge zwar von den Verbesserungen des Diskussionsprozesses aus, nimmt ihnen aber nichts weg. Von der Tatsache, dass nun eventuell deutlich durchdachtere Anträge auf den Parteitagen diskutiert werden, profitieren auch die Analogen.
2. Die “Analogen” sind eine Zielgruppe, die sich “aus natürliche Weise” die nächsten Jahren ausdünnen wird. Wenn zitierte Firma Apple eines ganz sicher nicht macht, dann ist es alte Technologien adaptieren. Auch für eine Partei ist das kein Siegerpferd.

Es gibt da ein Thema für das wäre die FDP so prädestiniert wie Sony für die Erfindung des iPods … und genau die gleichen Gründe verhindern vermutlich das die FDP in der Lage sein wird diese Welle zu surfen: Ich spreche von der wachsenden Forderung unser Wirtschafts- und Finanzsystem neu zu gestalten. Und zwar nicht mit einem Rettungsschirm sondern mit fundamentaler Neu-Konstruktion.

Nur so wie Sony zu viel Geld mit Musiklizenzen verdiente um sich selbst an digitale Musik zu trauen, besteht die Gefahr, dass die FDPzu sehr die (noch) Gewinner des alten Systems vertritt um diese Gedanken denken zu können.

I really appreciate the interesting ideas, unique infos and breaking news I get via my social network connections, but when I analyze the impact it has on my life, this pink noise is like cotton candy for my brain. It tastes great, but it does not make for a healthy diet.

So in order to create a well balanced information diet for myself and based one of the ideas that reached me over these networks (“Try something new for 30 days” by Matt Cutts) this is my initial rule set for the next 30 days:

1. No social networks before after dark.
2. No processing of the regular stream.
   • Only the top posts on the screen (max. 3) visible when opening the main screen are “allowed”. (It would be hard to ignore them anyway.)
3. No new Friends, Circle Members, Subscriptions.
   • uncircling and unfriending is ok.
4. Only direct messages and personalized updated notifications are processed.
5. Only personally created, unique content is posted, like links to a personal blog post.
6. G+ local messages are allowed (living in Bishkek that reduces the input stream to 1 to 5 messages a day).
7. All Push notifications are disabled.

Thanks for your rant. Here is what I disagree with ….

Ressources: I guess Kirgistan is blessed. You mentioned the water and nature yourself. The reason why there isn’t enough right now is the heavy import dependency of Kirgistan. With everything you import you export foreign currency. To refill that you have to export something and currently that is mainly natural resources, which again serves only a small elite. So what is also missing is local value chains. Ever tried to buy Kyrgyz shoes or pots etc. You’ll walk your feet off on the bazar looking for stuff like that while you get flooded with chinese stuff that is often so low in quality that it could be produced here easily.

Next problem: Missing cooperation. With the end of party dictated cooperation (aka. communism) people seem to have forgotten that cooperation (outside the family) is also possible on a voluntary basis. The whole thing has become a everyone for themselves game. Cooperation structures have to recover and I see them do that.

Next problem: phlegm. People are blinded by the amount of problems and have stopped to see what they can easily change. Example: playgrounds are often covered with broken glass. There are close to none resources necessary the keep a playground clean. Money is not an issue there. Garbage collection in Bishkek works well, despite the horrible first impression many of the trash cans make. Just, no one keeps the playground clean and no one even has a bad conscience about dropping junk anywhere including playgrounds. This attitude is found on many corners of society. You yourself mentioned corruption as one of them.

Merkels Reaktorsicherheitskommision (RSK) hat ihre Ergebnisse vorgelegt. Sie spiegeln laut Tagespresse die Komplexität des Unvorhersagbaren wieder und werden der Regierung die politische Entscheidung nicht abnehmen. Doch auch wenn die GAU Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Kernkraftwerkes so unvorhersagbar ist wie dessen Ursache, so haben wir mehr Entscheidungssicherheit als vielen bewusst ist.

Unvorhersehbare Ereignisse werden auch als schwarze Schwäne bezeichnet, angelehnt an die Tatsache, dass man sich bis zur Entdeckung Australiens absolut sicher war, das alle Schwäne weiß sind. Alle Beobachtungen schienen diese Annahme als Tatsache zu bestätigen. Aber irgendwann wurde er dann zum ersten mal gesichtet: der schwarze Schwan.

Hierbei handelt es sich um ein generelles wissenschaftlichen Problem. Aus der Abwesenheit von Hinweisen können wir nicht auf die Nicht-Existenz von Tatsachen schliessen. Diese Unsicherheit bleibt, auch wenn wir etliche neue, nie zuvor gedachte Möglichkeiten neu berechnen, so verbleiben doch immer noch unendlich viele undenkbare Möglichkeiten.

In Wirklichkeit bringt uns die Berechnung von Wahrscheinlichkeiten bei Ereignissen mit gravierenden Auswirkungen nicht weiter. Den Lottogewinner interessieren die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Sechsers mit Superzahl ebenso wenig wie sich ein Bürger von Fukushima heute für die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Super-GAUs interessiert.

Eines kennen wir heute aber ganz genau, das ist die verteufelte Dynamik die ein GAU, einmal in Gang gesetzt entwickeln kann. Wir wissen heute um die Unkontrollierbarkeit die Entstehen kann und wir wissen auch, das die globalen Auswirkungen noch viel schlimmer sein könnten als das was wir bis heute in Tschernobyl und in Fukushima gesehen haben.

Wir wissen auch, das der entstehende Atommüll mit den heutigen technischen Möglichkeiten nicht sicher entsorgbar ist und bürden zukünftigen Generationen eine Lagerzeit auf, die die komplette Existenzspanne unserer Kultur von heute ca. 12.000 Jahren bei weitem übersteigt.

Konfrontiert mit diesen Fakten sind die Entscheidungsprioritäten ganz einfach: Verhindere die Ursache und steige aus der Technologie aus. Das scheint heute politischer Konsens zu sein.

Der Rest ist jetzt ganz einfach: Es gibt keinen richtigen Weg, wir müssen nur einfach eine Abschaltreihenfolge wählen und dann hoffen, das bei den verbleibenden Reaktoren während der restlichen Betriebsdauer nichts passiert. Klar – das ist wie russisch Roulette spielen, aber das war diese Technologie von Anfang an.

Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde, es ist ein gutes Zeichen wenn das Deutsche Volk sich in solchen Zeiten einen Spitzenpolitiker nicht an Nebenkriegsschauplätze demontieren lässt. Ich glaube nicht, dass irgendjemand die Qualität der Doktorarbeit von KTzG gutheisst, aber auch für Ihn gilt die Unschuldsvermutung, und so akzeptieren ich seine Erklärung des unwissentlichen und leichtsinnigen Fehlers.

Die Umgestaltung unserer Bundeswehr stellt in diesen Zeiten des globalen Umbruchs eine Schlüsselaufgabe in unserer Regierung dar. Selbst bei mir als parteipolitisch engagierten Menschen verursacht die Fokussierung auf Doktorarbeiten und Hartz IV Erhöhungen im einstelligen Eurobereich nur ungläubiges Staunen. Sind das wirklich die Brennpunkte der Regierungspolitik, die unsere volle Oppositions-Aufmerksamkeit verdienen?

Also ganz ehrlich mir fallen da etliche Punkte ein, die ich für deutlich wichtiger halte:
* Wie helfen wir Nordafrika bei der poltischen Neugestaltung?
* Wie helfen wir uns selbst angesichts der politischen Neugestaltung Nordafrikas? Die Auswirkungen auf die Rohstoff- und Welthandelssituation könnten dramatisch werden.
* Wie helfen wir den Armen dieser Welt bei steigenden Lebensmittelpreisen ein Einkommen zu finden?
* [Damit zusammenhängend:] Wie gehen wir mit dem Flüchtlingsstrom aus Nordafrika um? Haben wir Alternativen zur üblichen ‘Asylantenverwahrung’? Können wir Schulungs- und Ausbildungsprogramme aus dem Boden stampfen um diese Menschen in einigen Jahren mit in Ihren Ländern dringend benötigtem Know-How und einer Lebensgrundlage zurückzusenden?

Dies, liebe Freundinnen und Freunde, sind die Themen, die ich in den Nachrichten und in der Presse diskutiert sehen will.

Jason Fried denkt und schreibt sehr im Kontext seiner Branche. Wenn es der Job der meisten Menschen im Unternehmen ist Programmcode zu schreiben, dann sind Störungen sicher die Hölle. Manche logische Probleme benötigen Zeit und Energie sich gedanklich überhaupt ‘hinein zu begeben’. Nach jeder Störung fängt man von vorne an und das kostet viel Zeit und Energie.

Ähnlich geht es mir beim Schreiben von Marketing Texten. Dort muss ich mich gedanklich in den Kontext meiner Zielgruppe begeben um kreativ sein zu können. Dazu Bedarf es Zeit und Konzentration. Nach jeder Störung die mich in einen anderen Kontext holt beginne ich erneut.

Aber nicht jede Arbeit sieht so aus. In manchen Bereichen ist das vorhanden sein von ‘Störungen’ unkritisch und der Kontakt mit Kollegen hilfreich. Sinnvoll ist es auch in solchen Bereichen eine Firmenkultur zu entwickeln, die Störungen minimiert und mit der Konzentration der Kollegen respektvoll umgeht.
